What If I Want A New Buddy

To replace your Buddy, click on the Trainer avatar picture on the main screen, then tap the Pokemon Buddy on the Trainer profile screen. After that, tap the Swap icon on the lower right. You’ll get a message that asks if you’re absolutely sure you want to swap buddies. Tap Yes, if you’re a fair weather friend. But beware you’ll lose any progress you have made if with your Buddy if you swap too soon! You’ll want to swap Pokemon Buddies out after walking the full distance for a Candy.Also, you should not evolve your Buddy, at least not until after you’re done walking and collecting Candy for it. How Does Motivation Work

Motivation decreases over time and correlates to the placed Pokémons CP . If you put a 2,500 Zangoose in the gym, it will have a cap of 2,500 Motivation. Immediately after being placed, the Pokémon will not have its maximum Motivation itll start a smidgen lower.

As Motivation goes down, so does the Pokémons CP temporarily, making it easier to knock out of gyms. However, the Pokémons temporary CP will never go below 20% of its normal CP.

Pokémon in gyms continuously lose Motivation over time.

What Determines My Chances Of Winning

Each Pokémon has a combat power and health points score. Broadly speaking, the higher the CP the greater the damage a Pokémon can do, while HP denotes how much damage it can take. But there are also hidden values. One, frequently called energy or stamina, denotes how fast your special attack meter fills up. Others differentiate between Pokémon of the same type and level, referred to as individual values , which the game uses to produce defence, attack and stamina scores.

Those with higher IVs will be more powerful than those with lower IVs at any given rank, which doesnt make that much difference at the start, but can make a big difference to how powerful your Pokémon is by the time it is fully evolved and powered up.

How To Assign A New Pokmon Buddy

• Head over to your buddys page and tap swap buddies.
• Tap yes to confirm swapping out your buddy.
• Scroll through your list or use the search function to find your new Pokémon.
• Tap on your new Pokémon. Now you have a new buddy!

Motivation Decay Over Time

The relationship between motivation decay and CP has been a bit convoluted. At the release of the rework, Niantic stated that Pokemon with 3000CP or more would decay at a rate of 10% per hour. For Pokemon 2999CP or less, they decay at 1% per hour.

After some research and a patch by Niantic, this has been proven false. Motivation decay scales with your Pokemons CP. Research is currently being done as to the exact relationship between CP and motivation decay. Reddit user u/DrThod_PokemonGo has some examples of what the motivation decay looks like for various CP values:

From this data, we can at least say that around 2300CP and greater, the decay rate is around 10%. Further testing is needed, but for now Pokemon below 2300CP will lose less CP over time, and therefore will hold a gym longer.

Okay I Have A Buddy Now What

Go for walks! No, really, now that you have a designated Buddy you should go on strolls. Similar to egg-hatching, you can gain Candy for your buddy the more kilometers you rack up. Interestingly, different Pokemon require you walk different distances. For example, you need to walk 3 kilometers before you get a Candy for Slowpoke. You only get one candy after walking that specific distance, though.You can find out more about your Buddy’s progress by tapping the Trainer profile icon, then tapping the top of the screen, where your Trainer and Buddy are hanging out. At the top of the screen you’ll see the total distance traveled. In the middle, you’ll see your Buddy . At the bottom, there’s a gauge that shows how far you still need to walk for a Candy.

What If My Team Already Controls A Gym

If you encounter a gym that some kind soul has already won for your chosen team then you have two options. You can either slot one of your Pokémon in there as a defender if there is a space, or spar with the defenders to increase the prestige of the gym, eventually increasing its level and potentially adding a slot for one of your monsters.

Youll get up to 50XP for each sparing match, and get to practice your battle skills, which sounds dull but could make the difference in a real fight.

Is There A Limit To The Number Of Gyms You Can Be On At One Time

Twenty is the current limit. Keep in mind, though, that the current Gym system doesn’t seem built to favor keeping a large number of Gyms. As you’ll see below, Gyms now take a lot of effort to maintain. So, unless you have 20 Gyms clustered around an area you’re in or pass by multiple times a day, you might find quality now beats quantity.

Find & Locate Gym Not On Your Team

Check your in-game location for gyms you can battle and defeat. You can battle in any gym that’s not on your team – you can check which ones are available depending on the gym color.

You Need To Be Near The Gym To Start Battle

You need to be within range of the gym to be able to battle it. It’s recommended to fight gyms on foot so as not to be moved away from them if you’re on public transport.

What Happens In A Battle

Instead of the turn-by-turn battle mechanic of previous versions of the game, Pokémon Go uses a static real-time system in which you command your monster with three basic gestures on the screen. A single tap launches a quick attack, a tap and hold launches a special attack once you have enough energy built up, and a swipe left or right dodges an opponents attack.

You fight until you win or the six Pokémon youre allowed to take into battle with you are defeated.

How To Turn On Adventure Sync

• Open the main menu. Tap on Settings at the top.

How Do I Take Over A Gym

To take over a gym you have to reduce its prestige to zero by defeating its inhabitants. One Pokémon in there will be the boss, which when defeated will lower the prestige by the greatest amount. Depending on the level you might have to defeat them all more than once.

You dont have to attack a gym alone multiple people can attack a gym at once and they dont have to all be on the same team either. You also dont have to win all battles to reduce the gyms prestige. You will fight each defending Pokémon in order until either you beat them all, your squad of six Pokémon have all been knocked out, or you run for the hills.

Motivation Reduction For Battles

Motivation loss in a battle is straightforward:

• After one Pokemon defending a gym loses, it will lose approximately 28% of its max CP.
• After a second loss, it will lose another 28% max CP.
• After a third loss, its motivation drops to zero, and the Pokemon is knocked out of the gym.
• If a defending Pokemon wins, the attacking Pokemon flees, or the attacker times out of the battle, the defending Pokemon loses ~1.6% of its max CP.

How To Actually Take Down A Gym In Pokemon Go

Like we mentioned earlier, every Gym has a certain amount of Prestige. When you defeat a Gym, you dont actually overtake it. Instead, youll remove a portion of the Gyms Prestige. Thus, in order to take down the Gym, youll have to fight it repeatedly to remove all of its Prestige. On lower level Gyms, this requires only a couple of battles. On maxed out Gyms, this could take all day. Make sure youre prepared with plenty of time, recovery items, and bring friends along to help. Your friends can attack Gyms at the same time as you! Here are some quick tips on taking down Gyms in Pokemon Go:

• You will only take down the Gym once its Prestige reaches zero. This may take several attempts. Note, you dont overtake the Gym. You will simply remove the other team from it. You will have to re-enter the Gym and place your Pokemon there in order to capture it for your team.
• A Gym earns levels after attaining a certain amount of Prestige. For instance, a level four Gym requires 8000 Prestige. If you knock a Gym below 8000 Prestige while battling it, it will return to level three. If it has four Pokemon, the weakest one of them will be forcibly removed and the Gym will only have three Pokemon left!
• Thus, as you whittle away the Prestige, the Gym will slowly get easier and easier to conquer.

A Few Additional Fun Facts About Pokemon Go Gyms

There are a few other things you should probably know before heading out to take down your nearest Gym:

• When your Pokemon is assigned to a Gym, you will be unable to use it. It cannot battle, you cannot level it up or evolve it, and you cannot heal it. Your Pokemon will be returned to you if it is removed from the Gym. At that point, you will need to heal it before you can use it for battle again.
• You will know if your Pokemon is on a Gym by checking your Pokemon team. Pokemon that are at Gyms will have little icons next to their picture. When they are returned to you, that little icon will disappear. This is a quick and easy way to determine if your Gym still stands. If the icon is still there, the Gym still belongs to you. If not, then hop in the car and prepare to go take it back!
• All Gyms are ordered from the weakest Pokemon to the strongest automatically. It doesnt matter who puts their Pokemon down in what order, the Gym always rearranges it to go from weakest to strongest.
• Cashing in your Gyms every evening in the Shop is the only way to earn Poke Coins aside from paying real money. At least for right now.

Even though Pokémon Go is turning five years old this week, its still going strong with upcoming events, some notable fans, and what appears to be a whole lot of profit.
